At this point, check the cam follower pin & the control rod. If the cam follower pin is worn replace it. Then, if you have a jig, adjust the linkage to specs. The ‘shade tree’ adjustment was to bend the control arm to compensate for normal wear in the linkage, springs & cam follower pin. Understand, I would say most likely it is a leaky piston, a new piston with o ring in a worn cylinder will probley not work for very long. I have two 8n and and in one I stayed with the steel rings, honed the bore out and still working after 10 years. the other one i went with the o ring and a new cylinder. had to polish the bore a lot in the new one, was disappointed on what it looked like.Probably a sticky exhaust valve. Take the round side cover off where your dip stick is. Reach in and push the rod to the rear. If it drops then clean and flush out the system.
